The Bright Side of Fall

Writer: Emma Gurney

As the summer temperatures begin to drop and the trees start losing their green tint, you may begin to feel a sense of sadness as the reality of yet another school year hits you. You may dwell on the fact that you’ll have to wait another 365 days to feel the warm summer breeze hit your face, to swim in the lakes up north, or to simply have a night when you can go to bed without feeling stressed about the massive pile of homework you were assigned and have yet to touch.

You could focus on these negatives and spend the next year counting down the days until school is over, but hopefully this article will convince you to look on the bright side and get excited for my favourite season: fall.

Fall has an unfair reputation; people tend to focus so much on the negatives that they forget to take time to enjoy the countless great things fall has to offer (including but not limited to the annual return of pumpkin spice lattes). Fall ushers in some of the best comfort food of the year: peppermint hot chocolate with a mountain of whip cream, warm apple pie, and creamy tomato soup. Sure, sipping lemonade on a hot day is pretty nice, but nothing compares to drinking your hot beverage of choice and walking through the crunchy leaves in your favourite sweater. And that brings me to another reason to love fall: the cozy clothing. Gone are the days of sweating through your shirt as soon as you step outside into the humid 40 degree weather; instead, fall is all comfy sweaters and fun jeans.

Fall is the best of both worlds; warm enough to leave home without a jacket, but cold enough to enjoy seasonal classics in comfort. Even without all of these subtle benefits, fall would still be the best season for a singular reason: Hallowe’en. From trick or treating with children in cute costumes, to eating your weight in candy, to Havergal’s annual Halloween assembly, this holiday is truly a highlight of every year.

Continue to savour your last few days of summer, but when you feel that first cool breeze or see that first orange leaf, don’t let it upset you. The best season in the world is coming up soon, and I hope I made you as excited as I am for it!
