Havergal has always been an outstanding pillar in our city’s community, both behind and outside the Ivy. However, there are many smaller and more intricate communities inside the walls of Havergal, simply waiting to be discovered. They are outlets that build long-lasting bonds between peers with common interests and ideas. Yet, with all this unity there is still a place for difference, which makes our community stronger. One such community is being covered today: the athletic scene at Havergal. This widespread topic will be covered by an overview of all it has to offer, and what the athletics at havergal has already done for this wonderful school many call home.

The development of Havergal athletics is a winding path, lined with rich history and memorable moments. The sports program at Havergal has been active since its founding year of 1894. The school has managed to produce well achieved alumni athletes, such as Kristina Valjas, a Canadian women's beach volleyball olympian, Alexandra Orlando, an Olympic rhythmic gymnast and Lois Butler, an Olympic skier. Gillian Apps was on the Canadian women's hockey team and was also an Olympic gold medallist. These are only a few among many notable alumni athletes. They all grew in their sports journeys at Havergal, given the support from teammates and coaches. Yet, one does not have to go on to be an Olympian after their years at Havergal to say they too have had a positive sporting experience in the school. Many girls build what they have learned from the sportsmanship they developed at Havergal into their future careers and mindsets. The Havergalian values of honesty, leadership, and collaboration are seen on the fields just as they are  in the classrooms. In 2005, the Athletic wing was constructed. In its creation it opened up a world of inclusive and exceptional athletic growth opportunities. For example it provided space to enhance the rowing at Havergal by adding many more machines. One of the two gyms includes a rock climbing wall which pushes students to explore their athletic abilities on the wall by learning new and unique skills;.  The development opportunities in the athletic wing pose a reminder that anyone is capable of growing as an athlete.

Furthermore, Havergal is home to many currently growing athletes who have made commendable strides in their athletic careers here at our school. Thus, it is only fitting that we give them a chance to talk about their experience at Havergal. A new girl at Havergal quickly took the school’s hockey season by storm. She proved herself quite competent in the rink, on the court, and the field. She works well with all her teammates and is the epitome of spirit. Izzy Tubbe in Grade 10 played for numerous sports teams this year. Here's what she has to say about her athletic experience at Havergal: “The opportunities I have been presented with through sports at HC have taught me not only new skills and lessons as an athlete, but as a student, and a person. When I look back on the teams I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, I realize that this is where the relationships I share with my teammates and coaches started and strengthened. The relationships that make me feel comfortable with making mistakes and trying new things, with the absence of fear of judgement. I have been shown time and time again the importance of being there for your teammates and cheering them on, success or failure.”

Another great athlete has also shown their skill like a true Gator during their time at Havergal played U20 field hockey while she was only in Grade 9. She has shown her advancement and enthusiasm in sports by joining a team almost every season. Macy O’Brien in Grade 10 has proven to be a valuable asset to any team she's on. Here is her input on athletic life at Havergal: “I have had an amazing experience as a player on the field hockey, hockey, and tennis teams at Havergal. The athletics program allows me to have fun, stay physically fit and build technical skills while also developing teamwork and leadership skills. Participating in teams has also allowed me to make many new friends across different grades. Playing sports at Havergal gives me both a strong sense of belonging at the school as well as a source of pride as I proudly represent my school in the community.”  Izzy and Macy are just two of many who have rendered Havergal’s values in their athletic development and achievement.

To conclude, this article covered the athletic experiences of both past and present athletes, and it highlights how important sports are to Havergal’s core values. Hockey Day and Gator Day are just a few of the amazing and spirited sports-centered celebrations that bring our community closer together. Peers and coaches alike learn and grow more when on the field or the court. Sports are essential to our school's identity; it is widely encouraged to play a sport, and for good reason. Sports help cultivate tools for success in life, not just on the field. It is mine and others' hopes alike that Havergal continues to encourage and create bonds between students through the connection of sports.
